• Decarbonisation is one of the main axes of the company's  sustainability plan, designed for the  period from 2022 to 2030, and includes self-consumption facilities through solar installations, energy efficiency measures,  and fleet migration, among other actions.

•  Abertis is also significantly increasing the number of electric  vehicle charging points -electroliers-  thanks to installation plans in France, Spain, Italy and Chile.

• Autopistas, the Abertis subsidiary in Spain, is carrying out  several innovative initiatives to advance in terms of decarbonisation, such as  the CRETA and EUMOB projects.

June 1^st 2023 - Abertis is making progress in the decarbonisation of its assets following the roadmap set out in the sustainability plan it launched last year, which will run until 2030. Its implementation is based on three-year plans with short- and medium-term objectives linked to the fulfilment of different targets, one of its main axes being the reduction of greenhouse gases on roads. In fact, its objective is to reduce CO2 tonnes by 25% by next year and by 50% in the next seven years (corresponding to scopes 1 and 2).

Promoting self-consumption facilities through solar installations, establishing energy efficiency measures, migration of fleets to less polluting vehicles, the reduction of emissions generated by users, the acquisition of green energy, improvements in waste management, the increased use of recycled materials with a lower environmental impact in their life cycle, or the increase in electric charging stations for users, are some of the measures that the company is carrying out in terms of decarbonisation.

"Decarbonisation in our toll road network is one of  the axes of progress outlined in our roadmap," says José Aljaro, CEO of Abertis. "Since we created our  Sustainability Committee in 2021 as part of our ESG Plan, we have been moving  towards increasingly sustainable road management from an environmental, social,  and economic point of view. In the first two years of work, we have launched  more than 120 initiatives to address new mobility challenges, such as preparing  motorways for electric, connected, and autonomous vehicles". "Toll  infrastructure managers can actively collaborate and promote the  decarbonisation of the mobility sector, becoming strategic allies in this field  in the countries where we are present", concludes Aljaro.

On the road to decarbonisation, Abertis is also significantly increasing the number of charging points for electric vehicles -electrolineras-. Specifically, at the end of 2022, it had 394, a figure that could double this year thanks to installation plans in France, Spain, Italy, and Chile.

Projects  in Spain to decarbonise roads

Abertis is making a big commitment from Spain to promote the reduction of harmful emissions on the roads. Through its subsidiary in our country, Autopistas, and its technology subsidiary, Abertis Mobility Services, it has recently launched CRETA, an innovative project to promote sustainable mobility and the reduction of emissions through 5G technology and the artificial intelligence. It has done together with other benchmark partners such as the MÁSMOVIL Group, OPUS RSE, CELLNEX, INDA, VINCES and ALPHA SYLTEC INGENIE.

Autopistas has also carried out EUMOB, a cross-border study between Spain and France, based on the digitization of roads and a pioneer in Europe. A project to promote safer, smarter and more sustainable mobility. Thanks to the traffic management solutions proposed by this project, traffic density will be improved and congestion will be reduced, which will have a direct impact on reducing fuel consumption and pollution by users.

Lastly, it should be noted that Autopistas has just renewed its environmental quality certification for its vehicle fleet through driver training and its vehicle renewal plan for its concessionaires. This badge, awarded by the Spanish Association of Automobile Fleet Managers (AEGFA) and the Institute for Energy Diversity and Savings (IDEA), certifies that the vehicle fleets of Castellana, Aulesa, Aucat and Avasa comply with strict standards of environmental respect and sustainability.
